Kitulgala
Kitulgala
The main attraction of Kitulgala is white water rafting, where you can ride the tidal Kelani River. Otherwise, it is popular for sports such as confidence jumping, flow slides, waterfall rappelling, and jungle trekking. Bird watching and caving and last but not least river trips and expeditions.
Kitulgala is set amidst densely forested hills. Most visitors are the young and energetic locals of Colombo, but foreign visitors are also beginning to discover the region’s white water rafting, jungle trekking, bird watching, and caving.
The other main reason for the city’s fame is that in 1957 David Lean filmed his Oscar-winning epic Bridge over the River Kwai here on the banks of the Kelaniya Ganga, although little physical evidence remains to be seen.
A few kilometers from Kitulgala is a large cave system where the 28,500-year-old remains of early humans were discovered. Many hotels in the area can organize a guide to the caves.
