Framed by towering highlands on its northern border, Uda Walawe National Park is one of the world’s best places to see wild elephants. Consisting mostly of grassland and scrubland, it is also one of the best national parks in Sri Lanka for wildlife viewing.

The sixth largest game reserve in Sri Lanka, Udawalawe National Park is located 180 km from Colombo in the south-central sector of the island.

The entrance to Udawalawe National Park is near an 11 km post between Timbolketiya and Tanamanwila on the Pelmadulla-Timbolketiya A18 road.

The park is just south of the Central Highlands, the escarpment of which forms an enchanting backdrop. In the middle of the park lies the Udawalawe Reservoir. Udawalawe National Park, established in 1972 with the aim of protecting the Udawalawe Reservoir catchment area, which provides water for agriculture and hydroelectric power generation, and covers an area of ​​30,821 hectares, resembles an African wildlife park: it acts are mainly thornbush jungles with grasslands.
